Are you prepared for lead-free compliance?This is no laughing matter.You've all heard of urban legends: stories like alligators in the sewers of New York. Well, in the case of our industry there are also technology legends: such as getting ready for the Lead-free challenge and how easy it should be. Urban legends are funny. Technology legends, however, are no laughing matter. Technology legends can, if the practice is pervasive, cost the electronics industry millions of dollars if we are not prepared. That is, all the pwb fabricator has to do to comply is simply eliminate hot air solder leveling in favor of one of several lead-free surface finishes. |
Not quite. One must also select the laminate materials that will be compatible with lead-free soldering. The introduction of these new laminate materials brings significant challenges to the fabricator with respect to desmear and metalization of these lead-free compatible laminates.
